London Conference 2018

Am 20. Oktober 2018 spielten wir von der Steelband Extempo in London im Rahmen der zweijährlich stattfindenden internationalen Steelpan-Konferenz auf – „grosses Kino“ für uns. Wir waren am Steelbandabend der Hauptact, im geschichtsträchtigen „Tabernacle“ in Notting Hill. Die Konferenz hat die Förderung von „Carnival Art: Steelpan, Calypso and Mas(querade)“ zum Ziel.

Bereits am Vorabend spielten wir in London. Das gemeinsame Konzert mit der Ebony Steelband fand im Yaa Centre statt. Die beiden Bands lösten sich mit je zwei Sets ab – Unsere Zusammenarbeit mit Ebony geht weit zurück. Schon im 2003 haben wie zusammen gespielt an einem legendären Abend in Männedorf. Der gute Spirit von damals war gleich wieder präsent., tolle Stimmung, Respekt und Bewunderung für die jeweils anderen. Zum Schluss haben wir Solisten zum Mitspielen eingeladen. Zu „Old Lady walk a Mile and a Half“ and „Falling in Love“ glänzten neben unseren eigenen Solisten Daniel Canzani und Markus Jordi die zugezogenen Samuel Dubois (Ebony) am Double Second und Tamla Batra am Single Tenor. Tamla ist ja in der Schweiz gut bekannt.

Auch am Samstagabend im Tabernacle gab es herzlichen Applaus und viel Lob für Extempo. Allerdings war das Programm im Rückstand, bevor wir als letzte Band auf die Bühne konnten. Wir mussten deshalb unseren Auftritt kürzen. Auch für die Einladung von Gastsolisten reichte es nicht mehr. Das Publikum wollte mehr hören, aber die Sperrstunde in London ist streng.

Während die Bandmitglieder per Flugzeug reisten, wurden die Instrumente (Steelpans, Perkussion) per Camion auf dem Landweg nach und in London transportiert. Mit regulären Bulletins informierte die Cargo-Gruppe die restlichen Extempos. Einiges stellte sich dabei sehr bald (aber erst in London) als „Fake News“ heraus. So wurde u.a. über einen nötigen Radwechsel (inkl. Aus-/Einräumen der Ladung!) oder über eine Kontrolle durch eine mobile französische Grenzwachteinheit (mit Konfiszierung der nicht deklarierten Schlagzeug-Sticks) berichtet, die nie stattfanden…

Die Kosten für Organisation und Durchführung des Projektes waren ausserordentlich und wurden zu einem grossen Teil durch die Bandmitglieder selbst getragen. Der Transport der Instrumente wurde mit 3‘500.- Franken budgetiert und mittels Crowdfunding-Projekt „London Calling“ (über)finanziert. So konnten die Kosten für Fahrzeugmiete, Verzollung, Fährkosten und Unterkunft der Crew vollumfänglich gedeckt werden. Als Gegenleistung für kleinere oder grössere Spenden wurden spannende Gegenleistungen (auch für Firmen) angeboten.

Projekte dieser Art sind in vieler Hinsicht bereichernd und motivierend. Dabei verlassen wir unseren gewohnten Übungsraum resp. -rhythmus, zeigen das Steelpan als vielseitiges Instrument und präsentieren die grosse Stilvielfalt unseres Repertoires. Die vorbereitenden Proben waren intensiv und sehr produktiv. Vor kurzem zu Extempo gestossen und auch in London dabei war der bekannte Perkussionist Willy Kotoun.

On October 20, 2018, we from the steelband Extempo performed in London as part of the biennial international steelpan conference – „big cinema“ for us. We were the main act on the steelband evening, at the historic „Tabernacle“ in Notting Hill. The conference aims to promote „Carnival Art: Steelpan, Calypso and Mas(querade)“.

Already the night before, we played in London. The joint concert with Ebony Steelband took place at the Yaa Centre. The two bands relieved each other with two sets each – Our collaboration with Ebony goes way back. Already in 2003 we played together on a legendary evening in Männedorf. The good spirit of that time was immediately present again, great atmosphere, respect and admiration for each other. At the end we invited soloists to play along. On „Old Lady walk a Mile and a Half“ and „Falling in Love“, our own soloists Daniel Canzani and Markus Jordi were joined by Samuel Dubois (Ebony) on double second and Tamla Batra on single tenor. Tamla is well known in Switzerland.

Saturday night at the Tabernacle also saw warm applause and much praise for Extempo. However, the program was behind before we could be the last band on stage. We therefore had to cut our performance short. There was also not enough time to invite guest soloists. The audience wanted to hear more, but the closing time in London is strict.

While the band members traveled by plane, the instruments (steelpans, percussion) were transported overland to and in London by camion. With regular bulletins the cargo group informed the rest of the Extempos. Some of it turned out very soon (but only in London) to be „fake news“. For example, there were reports about a necessary wheel change (including unloading/loading of the cargo!) or about a control by a mobile French border guard unit (with confiscation of the undeclared drum sticks), which never took place…

The costs of organizing and carrying out the project were extraordinary and were largely borne by the band members themselves. The transport of the instruments was budgeted at 3’500.- Swiss francs and (over)financed by means of the crowdfunding project „London Calling“. Thus, the costs for vehicle rental, customs clearance, ferry costs and accommodation of the crew could be fully covered. Exciting quid pro quos (also for companies) were offered in return for smaller or larger donations.

Projects of this kind are enriching and motivating in many ways. We leave our usual rehearsal room or rhythm, show the steelpan as a versatile instrument and present the great variety of styles of our repertoire. The preparatory rehearsals were intensive and very productive. Recently joined Extempo and also in London was the well-known percussionist Willy Kotoun.
